چکیده

A limited-area three-dimensional variational data assimilation (3DVAR) system applicable to both synoptic and mesoscale numerical weather prediction is described. The system is designed for use in time-critical realtime applications and is freely available to the data assimilation community for general research. The unique features of this implementation of 3DVAR include (a) an analysis space represented by recursive filters and truncated eigenmodes of the background error covariance matrix, (b) the inclusion of a cyclostrophic term in 3DVAR’s explicit mass–wind balance equation, and (c) the use of the software architecture of the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model to permit efficient performance on distributed-memory platforms. The 3DVAR system is applied to a multiresolution, nested-domain forecast system. Resolution and seasonaldependent background error statistics are presented. A typhoon bogusing case study is performed to illustrate the 3DVAR response to a single surface pressure observation and its subsequent impact on numerical forecasts of the fifth-generation Pennsylvania State University–National Center for Atmospheric Research Mesoscale Model (MM5). Results are also presented from an initial real-time MM5-based application of 3DVAR.

Development and optimization of the IPMMM5 GPS slant path 4DVAR system

This article describes the development of tools for routine 4-dimensional variational data assimilation of Global Positioning System Slant Total Delay (STD) data in the framework of the MM5 system at the Institute of Physics and Meteorology of the University of Hohenheim. The Slant Total Delay forward operator is introduced which allows model validation and the assimilation in the Message-Passi...

Three-Dimensional Variational Data Assimilation of Ground-Based GPS ZTD and Meteorological Observations during the 14 December 2001 Storm Event over the Western Mediterranean Sea

The impact of GPS Zenith Total Delay (ZTD) measurements on mesoscale weather forecasts is studied. GPS observations from a permanent European network are assimilated into the Penn State/NCAR Mesoscale Model (MM5) using its three-dimensional variational assimilation (3DVAR) system. The case study focuses on a snow storm that occurred during the period of 14-15 December 2001 over the western Medi...

Simulations of deep convection in the Mediterranean area using 3DVAR of conventional and non-conventional data

In autumn deep convection in the Mediterranean region is a common phenomenon. The local events characterized by deep convection are still a difficult task even for high resolution numerical weather prediction. Three flood cases, produced by convection either embedded in a large scale system or locally developed, occurring in Italy, are presented. All these case were not correctly forecasted: Sa...

Evaluation of radiative transfer schemes for mesoscale model data assimilation: a case study

The assimilation of Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) data into the Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5) allows for improving the weather forecast. However the results suggested an update the Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE) within the three-dimensional variational (3DVAR) algorithm which is tailored for non rainy conditions only. To this purpose, a new RTE algorithm is tested, in order to account fo...
